Doctor Who fans are already acquainted with beautiful Scottish actress Karen Gillan…

Karen played companion Amy Pond since the beginning of the 11th Doctor’s tenure, in 2010. While it's not yet known if she will still a part of the show with the new season, her new project should get anyone interested in photography very interested...

... Because she will be playing none other than model Jean Shrimpton in the made-for-TV movie We'll Take Manhattan.

Jean Shrimpton was one of the first supermodels, and with photographer David Bailey a symbol of the "Swinging London" cultural scene. The story revolves around Shrimpton's affair with Bailey and the influential 1962 British Vogue photoshoot that changed fashion photography forever.

Instead of a conventional studio shot, Bailey took the then relatively unknown Shrimpton on the streets of Manhattan to capture her beauty and style on the background of the busy streets of the Big Apple. It went completely against the rules, it went completely against the editor's wishes and, of course, it was great.

So, apart from the historical importance, what's there to be excited about? Well, the 1960's, models... And the fact that Jean is headscarved in some of the shots!

How will the TV movie hold up? Well, after looking at some of the promotional pictures and trailer, I think it will hold up well!

We'll Take Manhattan is due to air tomorrow (January the 26th) at 2100-2230 GMT. DVR set!

Channeling Liz

September's issue of V magazine featured a great photoshoot by Mario Testino, with Academy Award and Emmy winner (and I must add, Scarf Lady award winner) actress Kate Winslet channeling the last ever diva, the late Dame Liz Taylor, in a variety of poses wearing jewelry, turbans and - of course - headscarves.

All in all it's a very nice tribute to Liz, but I wish the photoshoot could have been bigger and even more varied. Kate surely looks great in a headscarf! She has already worn a Kelly in Hideous Kinky and a Classic in Enigma and in the miniseries Mildred Pierce, so it's a bonus seeing her in a Rear Tie.

Not too far from Heaven

Here is another great photoshoot I managed to miss, the Far from Heaven editorial by photographer Ben Toms for Muse, featuring model Rasa Zukauskaite.
Inspired by the 2002 movie of the same name starring Julianne Moore, the retro-themed shoot has Rasa wearing a variety of vintage clothing, including a couple of Classic headscarves.

Those Classic are very pretty, however in the movie Julianne Moore wore only Kelly headscarves...

However, I don't think we should complain: both Julianne and Rasa look stunning in their headscarves, whatever the style!

Bad Blogger

I just spent the best part of an hour trying to remedy the mess that is my blog. I must apologize to you, but it seems that as bad as a website designer I am (my site looks like something out of the early 1990s), I'm even worse as a blogger: pictures out of alignment, text messed up, layout completely wrong.

In my defense, I can only say that my background comes from desktop publishing, so I (very naively) didn't take into account that different browsers and different resolutions wouldn't be able to display the content the same way I saw it.

Well, I'll try to be more careful from now on.

Lacoste Jewellery 2011

A couple of days ago I happened to notice the advertisement on the left for the Spring-Summer 2011 Lacoste Jewellery line. The featured model wears a nice rear tie with one end draped over her shoulder, but the picture is a bit too cropped to see much.

Of course I tried to find out some more images and found a video on the official site, from which I took some stills.

Unfortunately we never get a full look at the model's wrap, but it's clearly a nice Peasant headscarf, worn low on the brow and with one end draped over her shoulder (so we can clearly see the Lacoste logo). A simple but very charming look indeed!

Classic Ashley Greene

Back in May 2010 my site's lady of the month was Ashley Greene from New Moon as the vampire fashion icon Alice Cullen. In the movie she wore a mixed style headscarf (Classic/Kelly) during a trip to Italy as typical Glamorous Disguise.

While as far as I know this is her first headscarf scene, in 2008 Ashley did a great photoshoot for Tyler Shields and in many pictures she wears a very pretty Classic headscarf.

Ashley channels the divas of the past with their allure and elegance, and it's good to see her in an untied Classic wrap, a look you don't see that often these times!

The Creek Girls

The girls from Dawson's Creek have grown up... Of course they were already grown, being around their twenties when the show first aired. Both Katie Holmes (Joey Potter) and Michelle Williams (Jen Lindley) have had varied and distinguished careers since then.

Of course there's a particular career aspect we're interested in so let's get to it. First of all, Katie Holmes...

... Who has recently starred in the miniseries The Kennedys as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Jackie O was one of the great icons of elegance of the 20th Century and she was a great headscarf wearer.

I haven't had the time yet to watch the whole miniseries carefully, however Katie wears at least a Classic wrap and a Peasant tie in two scenes.

I hope there are more scenes. Of course actresses playing Jackie's role end up wearing a headscarf in at least one scene. Here are three examples...

It pays to remember that Katie Holmes is a real life headscarf wearer, of course.

Now for Michelle Williams... She is starring in My Week with Marilyn as Monroe herself.

While movie-wise Marilyn Monroe has never been a great headscarf wearer, in real life she sometimes wore an elegant, plain white Classic or Kelly.

And in the movie, Michelle Williams sports a fabulous plain white Classic with sunglasses to complete the diva image.

I don't know if this will be her only headscarf scene in the movie or how long it will be, but just from the trailers and promotional pictures it looks like it's going to be a memorable one, hopefully with a lot of close-ups. Definitely one to watch out for.

Fashionable Peasants

In the last post, we saw some images from the D&G Spring-Summer 2011 collection. Since they're too good to leave alone, I'm posting some more images from the runway backstage...

The new year is here and I must say, it started off well...

Remember the D&G Fall-Winter 2009 collection and its Classic headscarves? Well, the 2011 Spring-Summer collection from D&G is just as interesting, but it features Peasant headscarves.

Of course, rear ties have been very popular as casual wear for a long time now, but it's nice to see some well-tied Peasant wraps worn properly! A really great way to start the year!

I can't really believe I have missed those...

Christina Ricci as the testimonial for the Samsonite Black Label Fashionaire accessories line's relaunch.

That's from 2007. Fashionaire dates back to the '60s and it's only natural that for its relaunch they wanted to go back to the '60s look - which by the way looks great on Christina!

A bit more recent, this is from Hobbs' NW3 Autumn-Winter 2010 collection...

The model on the left (I think it's Maaike Klaasen) wears a very pretty Classic wrap, side-tied.

The picture on the left is from the official collection, while the two on the right are from the "making of" video, which I just wish had been a little longer.

Headscarves apart, it's quite a nice, retro-looking collection. It's just an impression of mine or are we seeing more and more of these? Not that I'm complaining...

Long Live Vintage

Anyone interested in head scarf fashion has probably an interest in retro and vintage fashion as well. Luckily the Internet has no shortage of vintage enthusiasts with the same interests...

Candice Deville's (Superkawaiimama) site here provides plenty of vintage fashion suggestions and tips, along with a very nice headscarf tutorial video, showing different kind of wraps.

Another great site here by Phoebe Montague, and another vintage fashion heaven that simply must be bookmarked! The following video, part of her "Friday Chat" series, is a great tutorial as well!

Both videos feature rear ties, front-ties and classic wraps tied beautifully.

Anyone trying to reach my website recently has probably experienced problems. Right now funpic.de, my host, is undergoing maintenance and updating and will be not accessible for some time (I hope not too long).

Sex and the City 2

The NY girls are back and judging from the trailer, we have at least one headscarf scene with Cynthia Nixon wearing a very nice wrap.

I'll have to see the whole movie to check if there are more scenes but this one is really good, hoping it does last more than a few seconds!

And Cynthia Nixon talks about this outfit with the headscarf and earrings being one of her favourites in the interview below.

Jessica Stroup and the missing headscarf

I admit I have never been a fan of the original Beverly Hills 90210, so I wasn't interested at all in the sequel, titled simply 90210. However, some promotional pictures on the show's website featuring actress Jessica Stroup, playing Erin Silver, caught my eye...

Jessica wears a nice rear-tie in both the images I have found.

Unfortunately, in the show proper she's never seen with it. Of course, the Erin character seems to have been through a number of changes already in the early episodes, with her going from blonde to brunette and sporting a far different dressing style than what's portrayed in the promotional images, so it's not so surprising.

A pity, however. I liked the style. Oh, well.

Legends of the Fall...

Hello and welcome to my blog. This is the first ever post, so I thought it would be fitting to talk about the coming seasons in relation to our favorite accessory.
Lately a good deal of fashion designers have been trying to revamp the headscarf in various ways: Kelly, Classic, Rear Tie, there have been a lot of models with their heads nicely wrapped. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to translate very well in the streets but one can always hope...

Noa Noa has had a great Autumn collection this year, classy and timeless, with a couple of Kelly and Classic wraps worn in a perfectly natural way by their models.

However the most daring show so far has been presented by D&G, who had almost all their models in a Classic headscarf on their F/W 2008-2009 ready-to-wear collection.
Here we see Caroline Trentini and Jessica Stam in some really elegant outfits that are nicely complemented by their scarves.

"We wanted to revamp the headscarf... Give it a new life and introduce it to a younger generation. Our aim was to give it a modern and cool twist." Domenico Dolce explained.

Those headscarves certainly look cool and classy, but for any young woman it would still take some nerve (and a rainy day) to wear one without attracting some curious looks, alas.
Designers cannot certainly be blamed for not trying, however. This year, Pink Tartan’s Spring/Summer collection was all 1960’s and Kelly-style headscarves.



And who can forget Derek Lam’s Spring 2006 ready-to-wear collection, retro-inspired just enough and with a couple of nice Classic headscarves as worn by Lindsay Ellingson and Vlada Roslyakova.
Unlike D&G’s and Pink Tartan’s runway shows, those were the only two in the collection but were memorable enough.
In fact, there has probably never been one year when the headscarf didn’t feature in one collection or another in some form, practical or not. Rag & Bone, Paul Smith, Vera Wang and many others.

Those particularly charming wraps as worn by Emina Cunmulaj and Asia Pulco for Christian Lacroix’s Spring 2006 RTW collection are probably a little too complicated to tie on for anything but formal wear.

Fall is almost over, Winter is coming fast and there will be plenty of occasions to get the head covered. We’ll see!
